July 15, 1999Another funny link from Tony - Cat Haikus Well, its hot and sticky here again. I got very little sleep again last night. Poo. I've finally decided to buy a new camera. I'm thinking the Canon Elph 490z. Its an APS camera (i can hear the boo's now), but before you give me heck about the format, I just want something for snap-shots. I can have the pictures droped to CD when i get the film developed, and at web resoultions, it will be more then fine. So there! They are listening. BBC report about the British government taping all calls to Ireland. There is another take on this from The Independant. More info on the new Amiga box. Good article on Slashdot about the changeing face of news and how it is presented. Pretty long, but good.
July 14, 1999Well, today is a low news day - I've been working on a new Rant, and will let you know when its done. I ordered my ADSL today, so hopefully by the 22nd it will be up and running! YA! Rumor mill/Gosip - one of the Geek Ring is up to some R & D. Something to do with HCI (Human Computer Interaction) and Interface Design... Will reveal all when the NDA is removed... Very Exciting, stay tuned...
July 13, 1999Way cool - Star Trek Universal translator's, here we come! Linux User Interface's and other 'make Linux more user friendly' stuff... HCI (human computer interface) stuff... Rumors about the next Indiana Jones film! Another couple of years though. All the films I want to see now are not going to be out for several years! Crap. <sigh> Just a quick note to cast derision upon my other Geek Ring members. Lalonde has not had an update since... the 13th of last month! Ryan did a one liner on the 12th, but it was pretty darn lame. And Tony!? Who the hell knows what he is up to! Geezz. <grin> This comes from Tony - Drug Monkeys. Really.
July 12, 1999Article from Wired about Third Voice fixing the security hole they had. Well, I'm not sure how I feel about this one. Microsoft investing in Rogers Cable. Hurm. Well read it for yourself. From the CBC. Well, now that I've got you all concerned about security and privacy on the 'net, check out Zero Knowledge Systems. They have some pretty interesting tools coming out that might be worthwhile... Defcon 7 was held this last weekend in Las Vegas. Here are some good articles on the goings ons. More crazyness in the Kevin Mitnick trial. More chunky bits re: Lord of the Rings. A rant about Death Race 3000 is available too. Sounds like it went from cool to crap in 1 day. <sigh> A key all keyboards should have. An excellent selection of links relating to the 'net, security and other cool geek stuff Men Who Use Computers Are The New Sex Symbols Of The '90s by Scott Adams. Pretty funny. In the same vein : A girl's guide to geek guys and the response : A guy's guide to geek girls. If you get into a Geek on Geek relationship, this might be appropriate.
July 9, 1999Hope you all had an excellent weekend! New digital Camera with res to 'rival' film. Huh. I will believe it when i see it. Check it here. Heheh, check out The Hacker's Diet, How to lose weight and hair through stress and poor nutrition. Pretty funny. And long. If you liked 'Death Race 2000' you should read this. This got me looking up old car chase movies. Cannonball Run and The Gumball Rally came to mind right away. Ah, those wacky silly films! Well, I think that I'm going to be getting ADSL through Sympatico. There are some pretty interesting services for those of us with dynamic IP's. Check out dynip (Canadian!) or dyndns. Pretty cool. I'm going to have to run NAT on Linux, and some kind of firewall software. I think my old 486 will get pressed into service for this. Have to do a bit of upgrading. Bigger hard drive, some kind of CDRom drive... Actually, if i get a network card for it, I could use my new computer as the 'server' and read the CDrom over the LAN... Hurm... Must think further... Ok do you remember/know about the Philidelphia Experiment? The one about making a ship invisible to radar? Well here is a link to some info about it. All kinds of crazy, wacky stuff about it on the net. Here is another article. Here are some more links.
July 8, 1999Interesting article at Slashdot about a novel way to encourage creation of 'work', whether that be novels, art or music... Another article about content and the importance of artists, writers and other undervalued resources in the new media field. Do you care? Amiga has chosen Linux as its core OS. Here is the press release, and this is a message from the Prez. about why they went with Linux (they were looking at QNX). Privacy and Technology - feel scared? You should. More info on Third Voice and its security holes. Here is a good site that is anti-Third Voice. I personally like the idea, but still have reservations about it... Write music? Have a 3com PalmPilot? Check this out. Here's a cartoon, pretty good, a PDA BBQ. In case you haven't noticed, I'm tired of being pissy, and have decided to give a go at being human again. Hopefully it will work. <grin>
July 6, 1999Man, I've been in a totally pissy mood this week. Just on edge and snaping at folks. I'm going to blame it on the fact that my back still hurts. Ya, thats it. Ya, I'm just feeling listless and uninspired. Sorry.
July 5, 1999Still hot as hell. Crap. It is supposed to get cooler tonight. I can only hope... The iMac design is showing up every where

As i was not sleeping last night, i managed to play a bit of Fallout. What a great game! Lots of fun. I am actually thinking about checking out the sequel that is now available... Here is a review of Fallout at Next-Generation Online. Here is a review of Fallout 2.
July 2, 1999I think i talked about the great articles David Brin wrote for Salon about Star Wars. If not, check the links, then read this. It is a response that he has written to all those who wrote him about the original articles. Special quote. This comes from the FAQ about IPv6, which will over the next few years replace IPv4, which is the current version used for the 'net. QuestionThis is excellent! We can now track people by having 2.2*10^20 computers on every square centimeter of land on the planet! Ok, wait, what is the density if we take the surface area of the whole planet, cuz someday we will be living on the water too... Hang on, I'll go look it up. (furious net lookups, calculating and scribbling on scrap paper) Ok, here we go. 6.6*10^19 addresses per meter square, using the total surface area of the Earth. How large is a 128 bit address space? (The current standard, IPv4, is a 32 bit address space. jos)
Answer
It is 2 to the 128th power which means, 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456 different IP addresses can be assigned. This means that if we set the world population at 10 billion, there is 3.4*10^27 addresses per person, and if assign addresses by land mass, an average of 2.2*10^20 addresses per square centimeter. There is very little chance of addresses running out.
Holy Crap is it ever HOT! 40 degrees Celsius with the humidex is really too hot. At this point I'd like about -5 with 2 feet of fresh powder snow! Ya baby, bring on the snow. On a personal note, I totally crunched my back this weekend. Was in much pain on Saturday, which was double torture as I'd just set up the new computer the night before. New toys and unable to play!!! The pain! <grin> But I did sally forth to purchase a game or two - Myth II: Soulblighter, and Ciara(!) got Baldur's Gate. The Baldur's Gate game came with Fallout I as well, which looks pretty funny... Again, my apologies for a lack of updates to the site and the old 'sites' that existed. Just getting everything under control here, and will be back on track in the next couple of weeks. Really. Also, a quick 'way to go' to Michael! He started his new job today, and I just wanted to wish him a big 'good luck'! Oh, all the June news is now in the old news section... if you really want to re-read that crap <grin>.
Hope you all had a happy Canada Day! I know its been a while since the last update - I've been busy in the RealWorldTM, so my appologies! Things will once again reach their feavered pitch as I will be getting my new computer today, allowing for much foolishness and web updates. Be afraid. Be very afraid. That is about it for now, will have more updates, micro-sites, and all that silly stuff coming soon!
