Was reading about the Turing machine implemented in Conway's game of life off of slashdot, and got to this link about Stephen Wolfram, the inventor of Mathmatica. It sounds like his new book will be very interesting. Very heady stuff.

Word of the day : Gauche
So, i'm not really a big sports person, but i have to admit that i might watch the Grey Cup today. It's interesting to note that this is the 88th Grey Cup and the SuperBowl is only in its 30s.
Ok, so i was just wondering, does anybody listen to the radio station? Should i keep it up? I haven't updated the tunes in a couple of weeks (no money for new CD's), and i just need some feedback - blatantly fishing for feedback, actually! <grin> Drop me an email.
Would like to take this moment to congratulate Tony on being the Champion of the Galaxy and Universe at Crash Team Racing!
Just got the new National Geographic. One of the stories was on Polar Bears. In the online version they have links to the 'Hinterland Who's Who' regarding the bears. - do you remember those from tv? Can you hear that music in your head right now? The video's are available online too, which is pretty damn cool, in MPG and WiMP formats.
Must remember to not ever start to reinstall a computer's OS at 3 in the afternoon. Especially on a friday... Unless you want to stay at work till 2 in the morning...

Humm - for all you (any left?) director developers out there, this guy has released the source for a complete adventure game. "I'm not joking, here is the full source code for a fully functional adventure game that I wrote. Its features include a realtime battle system using swinging swords, enemy's, stores, NPC's, the Ability to save your progress and resume it later, and much much more. The code is heavily commented, you won't have any problems finding out what a particular piece of code does, I also included a .txt document in the zip, that explains each handler". Cool.
Ok, i know that you all know about the LEGO Dark Side Developer kit that allows you to build your own StarWars LEGO robots, but this review at DailyRadar is a good funny read.
Running a LAN at home via a xDSL or Cable connection? Thought about getting some security set up? Try ZoneAlarm - its a free firewall that runs on Window's computers.
Another file sharing/name space scheme - MojoNation. Somewhat similar to Freenet.
If you have some time on your hands and are interested, the first draft of the tech review of Carnivore is available now.
I would like to congratulate Tony for joining the rest of the clued world in switching over to Google for all his searching needs.
Blatant self (company) promotion - could you all go and vote for SafehouseLive? Just click on the 'vote' link, and that's it. So easy, i don't know why you wouldn't do it <grin>. You can read about it all here.
Oct 16th through the 31st have been archived in the old news section.

Reading a series of articles on computer RPG design for the next millennium by Warren Spector. He also wrote an interesting rant about the state of game's currently, which i think prompted the previous article. (link - Bryan)
Got on the topic of Dr. Who today cuz tomorrow is the anniversary of the first episode broadcast back in 1963. Ah yes, cheap sets, great stories and lots of action!

Microsoft's "Tablet PC". Don't know about the look, but i do want something just like this... Here's some propaganda about it.
Wow. Check out this .mpg video (1.8 meg) and this story at Wired. I want one of these. Volumetric 3D with-out glasses. images floating in space. 3D interfaces. Cool. (link - desktopian.org)
More info around what is not being reported by the mainstream media regarding Israel and Palestinian. Here is a report from HRW documenting what they saw when they were there, Oct 4th through the 11th. (link - Ciara)

Some good links over at the secretlair from last week. In regards to the problems tony had with IE/IM, if you reinstall NT workstation you get IE 2 by default. So you want to upgrade, right? Well, you can't get to microsoft's site with IE 2. Dumb. Very very dumb.
I did make a small mistake when i went away for the weekend - two of the magazine's i took were this magazine and adbusters. Now, don't get me wrong, they are both excellent mag's, and i pretty much agree with all of what they have to say. Its just that when you are going away for the weekend you don't want to be overloaded with how fucked up our world is. In the letters section of adbusters, i found this clipping, which i thought was so right on, it was kind of scary. What do you think?
"What has so exhausted the world for us? For one, we are all exquisitely self-aware...Even in solitary encounters with nature, bicycling on a country road or hiking on a mountain path, we reluctant ironists realize that our pleasure in these places has been anticipated by a thousand L.L. Bean catalogues, Ansel Adams calendars, and advertisements promising a portion of the rugged or bucolic life. So we sense an unreal quality in our words and even in our thoughts. They are superficial, they belong to other people and other purposes; they are not ours, and it may be that nothing is properly ours. It is this awareness, and the wish not to rest the weight of our hopes on someone else's stage set, that the ironic attitude expresses." (excerpt from Jedediah Purdy's book "For Common Things" - from a letter by Rod and Lennie Kat)
Just found this interesting review of the book from Salon.com - they dont exactly give it a glowing recommendation. Regardless, this passage still resonates for me (oh god, when did i start using language like 'resonate'?).
Found a good series of articles/tutorials on Python, aimed at the beginner programmer. Pretty good.
Back from the cottage - what a lovely time to get out of the city. Fireplace, quiet, no pressing 'things to do', just lots of reading, sleeping and eating...

Ok, this is the only reason i'd get a cell phone.

I hope everyone has a great weekend!
So busy at work, no time to keep updating the site, sorry sorry sorry! Lots of stuff going on in RealLifeTM too, so that's been keeping my attention!
Ok, the radio is back on air - sorry for the delay!
November 14 2000
Having some problems with Sympatico, my ISP, so no updates... sorry...
November 12 2000
I know, i know, no updates for like a week! Sorry, was actually really busy at work! Had a very productive week, actually - leaned a lot of new stuff around GNU/Linux, CVS and Samba. Almost starting to feel comfortable using and configuring it! Had a fun time at the Royal this weekend too, saw some horse jumping, ate lots of good food, and petted some cows. Of course there was also that little thing, you know, the election down in the States, and we all know the craziness that is going on with that... We also have our own election tomorrow - get out and Vote! Then the federal election on the 27th, i think.
November 7 2000
Great abandonware site - Underdogs. Lots of great old games, actually a pretty cool resource for seeing what different publishers produced in the way way back day's of yesteryear...
Election day in the states... get out and vote... if you live there...
Daily Radar calls Shenmue "Best. Game. Ever." Sounds good. I also got to see Jet Grind Radio, and it looks great too... I may have to put off the PS2 purchase for a bit and pick up a Dreamcast...
Good article on Wired today about Lego and how they dealt with hackers that hacked the mindstorm kits. Wish more companies would follow their lead - it certainly has not harmed their bottom line! (link - HNN)
November 6 2000
Ok, having cooled off a bit, i'd like you all to read this article on the crazy adams mine garbage proposal. Then i'd like ya'll to really think about voting for Tooker. We've got to start making changes, and i think he is the best choice we have. Its not even a case of voting for the person you least hate! David Suzuki, Naomi Klein, Michele Landsberg and others think so too. Go vote! Really. No joke. Please.
<rant mode> I'd like to, once again, just mention that i fucking hate all the bullshit party's and candidates that i have to choose from for pretty much any and all the elections coming up. They are all the same, they all work for the same boss, and that sure as shit aint 'the people'. About the only one i like is Tooker Gomberg, and i know he is not going to win against Mel. Christ, you know, its all just such a sham anyway, why dont we just let the damn multinationals run things out in the open, rather then the round-about way they work now? it just seems more honest. </rant mode>
Tony has a report about Armored Core 2 on the PSX2 up. He neglected to mention that i kicked his ass at it. Just thought that i should fill that in.
Oi. ExtendMedia in trouble. See what happens when you have lots of money but no clear vision? Sad. Hope nobody i know there gets the pink slip.

Sick of DNS? Wondering who the hell thought it up and why? This is a pretty good essay about DNS and the role it was originally made to fill, and where it might be going.
Interesting book online - Ain't Nobody's Business If You Do. Read the overview chapter.
Very interesting bit on slashdot today, in response to the fact that some lunatic math major (here in canada) computed the quadrillionth binary digit of pi.

Take checksums of all the metallica MP3s and start a distributed project to search pi for them. Since pi is both infinite and random, they've gotta be in there somewhere. Once you know where they are in pi, you can compress the songs to however many bits are needed to express the first and last positions in pi. Since we can calculate pi starting at an arbitrary location, playing the song would just be a matter of piping bytes in from your calculation program (given the start and end locations) to your MP3 player.
In other news, the RIAA gets a restraining order against PI.
Who the hell would think of this? I love it.
I'm sick. piss off.

Yep. Not really much to say today. Go read tony's site.

I had no idea that Mike Moore did a video for Rage Against the Machine. Its pretty damn good too - Media Player 300k 100k or Real G2 300k 100k (lower bandwidth streams available on moore's site).
Humm, can these be described as costumes, porn or tattoo's.?
More about voting systems and alternatives, specifically "proportional representation".
