December 31, 1999
December 29, 1999Hey, if we are all here next week, come out to the Clearspot (here is a map) on Saturday for my birthday! The end is nigh! ... or not. Happy New Year's Eve!
December 25, 1999Back into the computer game again - hope everyone had a pleasent time, ate too much, and generally acted in 'debauchery' mode. Now its time to pay the price!
December 24, 1999Its Christmas! Have a happy day!
December 23, 1999The Hacker News Network has its top 10 stories of 1999 up. Definatly worth a read. Christmas Eve.
December 22, 1999I read this on Salon today - "...for the peripatetic hacker." - this was in regards to Eric Raymond. Wondering what peripatetic means? I did. I'm pretty sure the author of the story was using the third meaning... From WWWebster DictionaryMain Entry: 1peri·pa·tet·ic
Pronunciation: "per-&-p&-'te-tik
Function: noun
Date: 15th century
1 capitalized : a follower of Aristotle or adherent of Aristotelianism
2 : PEDESTRIAN, ITINERANT
3 plural : movement or journeys hither and thitherI know that you have probably already seen and read this (from slashdot) but i've got to post this here. A review of the "STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL". Not only do i remember this from way back when, but Suspect Video has a copy and Scott and I watched it last year. And yes, it does stink. Really bad. It's so bad its not even good, thats the kind of bad. Read the review, its much funnier then the special.
December 21, 1999More neat 'work environments'... microsphere! get me one! under 2k. not bad. LG Electronics Unveils Net/MP3 Refrigerator. Really. From geeknews.net Ok, i am getting this for myself - MTV Music Generator - ignore the fact that it has MTV in the title, this tool, for the playstation, sounds so cool, i've just got to try it out, if even for the interface. How do you edit audio samples with a playstation controller? I don't know, but i've got to find out. Here is an MP3 that the guys at DailyRadar.com did. You can read there review at the above link, and there are 2 other sample songs which come with the software... If i had a really really rich relative/friend who was wondering what to get me, they could get me the things in this article. Mummm, cold fusion... I have started to plan... ok, think about planing to go to next years Burningman. Anybody have any suggestions? Tony has another huge update on his site, check it out. Seeing how Ryan has already posted this on his site, i will post it here too... We have aquired the URL GeekRing.com. Scary but true. I'm not really sure where this will lead, but i'm sure it will be trouble <grin>! www.oneofthose.com joins the GeekRing
I'm not sure if she has the code up yet, but if you go back from my site or forward from dave's you will get to our newest members site!
YaaaaaaaaaHoooooooo!WWAAAAYYYY CCCOOOOOOLLLL!!!! Lalonde has his new 'Jinx adventure' up and running on the YTV website, go play it now!!! Color Palm coming next year... Maybe i should hold off on that Visor? Naaa, the Visor it too cool, and the Palm unit will (probably) be too much. So we were locked out of the office yesterday - seems that the person we sub-let from was a bit behind on the rent... weeeee... Ok, so i too can be taken in by urban myth. Turns out the whole 'brightest moon in 133 years' thing is a bit of a myth. However, not all of it is untruthful, and there is some good discussion at slashdot about it...
December 20, 1999Interesting stuff going on with regards to the GeekRing. Stay tuned! Good show tomorrow night - (from Greg's site)
DEAD VOICES ON AIR and NOT BREATHING
with BITTER HARVEST and DJ GREG CLOW
Reverb, 651 Queen St. W., Toronto
$10 at the door - doors open at 9 PM - 19+Don't forget to go out and dance around in the full moon tonight... Ah yes, good news bit from Tony - David Suzuki - Scientist Hopes Y2K Will Shut Down Earth for a Rest.
December 19, 1999Ryan has a new update as well - a banner day! Tony has a very full update today - go check it out.
December 16, 1999Mad Max 4? Could be... Almost the Solstice! Hope ya all had a great weekend! I finally got some sleep! Yaaaa!
December 15, 1999Fun fun fun! Third annual SKI/SNOWBOARD WEEK-END! Cheap weekend of snow/skiing. Check it out, i've gone every year and its always a gas. Some interesting info regarding the full moon on the 22 of this month. A Once in a Lifetime Occurrence in DecemberThis year will be the first full moon to occur on the winter solstice, Dec. 22, commonly called the first day of winter, in 133 years. Since a Full moon on the winter solstice occurs in conjunction with a lunar perigee (point in the moon's orbit that is closest to Earth), the moon will appear about 14% larger than it does at apogee (the point in it's elliptical orbit that is farthest from the Earth). Since the Earth is also several million miles closer to the sun at this time of the year than in the summer, sunlight striking the moon is about 7% stronger making it brighter. Also, this will be the closest perigee of the Moon of the year since the moon's orbit is constantly deforming. If the weather is clear and there is a snow cover where you live, it is believed that even car headlights will be superfluous.
On December 21st, 1866, the Lakota Sioux took advantage of this combination of occurrences and staged a devastating retaliatory ambush on soldiers in the Wyoming Territory. In laymen's terms it will be a super bright full moon, much more than the usual AND it hasn't happened this way for 133 years! Our ancestors 133 years ago saw this. Our descendants 100 or so years from now will see this again. Remember this will happen December 22, 1999.
some good alternative news outlets on the whole WTO thing. One World, WtoWatch and The Mid-Atlantic InfoShop. Check out this image. Very Ad-busters. Shit, 15 days to 2000. Less till Christmas. Crap. Hey, the Solstice is coming up also, which is nice, in a pagan sort of way. Why the hell isn't it Friday today? Huh? I want it to be. For some strange reason this has been a very long week... <sigh>
December 14, 1999Wondering what the hell is going on with the US Patent office? Here is an article which gives some info into how and why things are the way they are... Ok, not as light as the below bits, but still very interesting article : Angry Mac Man: Macintosh is the 'Nigger' of the Computer Industry Get on the pre-order-list for your Playstation 2 today! Oh ya - i've got to tell my friend Scott this - MAGE (the comic) is coming to film... Nice. Yaaa!! 1st pic from Miyzaki-san's new film! So hopefully today will have lighter and happier news then yesterday!
December 10, 1999Nice flash stuff - help files, examples, the whole works. Ok, this is just ... disturbing... LARA CROFT CREATOR BUSTED IN KID-SEX SCANDAL Albert Einstein's Theory of Relativity - In Words of Four Letters or Less
December 7, 1999You all should go check out HonkWorm.com, its got some very funny content - follow the 'show' link, then click on the 'fishbar' link. Very funny. You will laugh. It's Friday! Yaaaaaaaa. Hey, just wanted to say Happy Birthday to my Mom!
December 6, 1999Oh ya - nice article on what the PS2 is going to do. I can not wait for this thing. Lots of movies, but the server is flooded, so you might have to wait a bit... Nude Man Carrot - thanks Tony Neet story about a SysAdmin living at the South Pole. By way of Slashdot.
December 4, 1999Saw "Bulworth" and "Tampopo" over the weekend. Both very funny films. Tampopo has a great western-like thing going through the whole film, very funny (i should mention that its Japanese). Bulworth is a very biting political ... satire? I guess. You should rent them both, very good and funny. Ya, internet from Work! My short period of un-connectedness is now over! Productivity can now drop again!
December 1, 1999Cool, if old - Quake II mod - Transformers! Online guide - how to destroy your computer. with Pictures! Great site for comix online, check it out. If you think the security stuff we are going through here in North America vis the Internet, is bad, you should hear about Australia... Holy shit - dont hack banks in China! Story about 2 brothers who hacked into a bank, stole some bucks, and one of them is going to die for it. Sorry about the lack of updates, i've been trying to get myself sorted out at my new work. Getting there, slowly! Ok, i know this is probably old news to most of you, but i think its pretty keen - www.iCraveTV.com is streaming TV stations over the net, in Canada. Check it out - its free, and yes the quality is pretty bad, but still - CBC, TVO, City, etc. online... nice.
November 30, 1999First Day of work at my new job today. No internet access yet. A whole day without email. Lordy. I almost broke down and cried.
November 29, 1999Ya, more privacy violations! Comet Cursor tracks what you do and where you surf! Nice. Did you know? Another Mars mission touches down on the red planet on friday! Cool. Funny Y2K 'stories'. This guy emailed companies like HagenDaz to ask about their Y2K compliancy. Read it, its funny. From Slashdot.
November 28, 1999Crazy brain/computer interface stuff. Read it. From Salon.com by way of Slashdot.
November 26, 1999So i spent most of the day yesterday sleeping! I think i got to sleep around 9:45am... arg. But it was fun, so thats good.
November 25, 19997:40am and i'm going home. Oh ya - i archive Octobers news in the old news section. right, its now 5:15am, just finished Alien3. Moving on to alien resurection. Feeling a bit dazed. Ok, its actually the 27th but its 3am and i don't feel like changing the date. Im still here at EM with Jason and Russ watching the Aliens films. All of them. Going on to number 3 now. Shouldn't have eaten all the shitty chips that i did. I am also really starting to notice the fact (sad as it may be) that i'm all too close to 30 and staying up all night is becoming harder and harder. ah well. Well, last day to EM. Wow. Bye. "So, this is it. We are going to die." Auther Dent - Hitch-hikers Guide to the Galaxy.
November 24, 1999Tony finally got his G4! Ya for Tony! Pity the rest of the world. Yikes - British law turning back the clock! Privacy and innocent until proven guilty, all being erased! An editorial by R. Stallman Yummie Flash site - http://www.open-here.co.uk/. Heard about this on the radio today - a MP convicted of attempted Rape. Quote from the Star. "Alberta Reform MP Jack Ramsay showed no emotion as a jury found him guilty last night of attempting to rape a 14-year-old girl 30 years ago." Nice. He is also facing charges of 'unlawful confinement' against another woman. (*note - i'm not really sure why i wanted to put this story up. I guess in the spirit of always questioning. Just because somebody is in a position of power/respect does not mean that you should not question. Don't make assumptions... Or i could just be disgusted by this and wanted people to know about it.) Way cool - article/photos of the brain during the 'laying down' of long term memories! I feel a bit bad for the poor little mice who's brains were sliced into tiny little strips, but hey, it for the progress of science, right? From the BBC via geeknews.net A nice email from ryan (titled 'die, SGI') pointed me to this article. Ryan also had this to say: "thats what they get for price-gouging for 10 years. but still, nice computers. oh well." I have to agree. Nice computers. oh well. Happy Thanksgiving to all those Americans. Here is a link that i think is appropriate for the occasion (not to play favourites, i would have put this up during our Thanksgiving if i knew of it). Second last day at EM.
November 22, 1999I can't believe that i forgot this! In my accident last night, my palmpilot was in my chest pocket. Well, not only was i hurting, but i was sure i'd busted it. Pulling it out, i could see that the case had popped open a bit, but the screen was uncracked. Tentatively turning it on, i was very happy to see it work! This old (originally a palmpilot 5000) pilot has really managed to weather some poor handling that i've thrown at it. Can you tell that i really like my Pilot? A product i want - Freedom from Zero Knowledge Systems. You can read some (PHd) papers from their chief technologist here. More Handspring problems... Sounds like they really were not ready for the huge demand the Visor generated, which, quite frankly, they should have anticipated. Read about it here at Forbes. Weird coincidence from hell. So last night Ciara picks up her dad from the airport. He was going to stay over at our place, but they rush down to the train station and he just makes the six o'clock train. As the train passes near the Darlington Power Plant, a freight train, going the other way, strikes a truck at a crossing. The truck is pushed into the VIA train, knocking it over on to its side. The accident some how causes a propane leak in the freight train, which, of course, ignites and explodes. Now the weird part. No one was seriously injured in the accident. And (there had to be an 'and' in there) I did a very dumb thing on my bike at a rail crossing at just about the same time of the accident and smashed my chest into the rails. Strange. Saw "The Messenger" last night. It's kind of like the Joan of Arc Action movie. Looked great. Nice fight scenes. A bit weak on actually depicting Joan tho. A good Tuesday movie.
November 20, 1999Way cool windows Shell replacement! ICESPHERE. I just started to play with it - very nice. You should also check out geoShell, a nice small shell. good night! I've got to archive this page soon! This is for Geoff - Elric Game Goes Online Ryan has a funny update on his site. More privacy concerns - read about how a reporter hired a private investigator to get info on him online. Pretty scary. Just say it with me children - you have no privacy. Ok, so is this the coolest shit or what? Man, i remember when i was younger, Geoff and i would always be talking about life on other planets and how there just must be plants out there - and they finally discovered them! Now they are able to figure out what the atmosphere is like! Crazy coolness...
November 16, 1999Well that's it for tonight. May have more tomorrow - i hope the Xfiles this week is better then last week, tho i seem to be in the minority with that sentiment. Cool game. Ok, it sounds cool, and its Canadian ya! Read about it here, then check out their web site. - ok, having just read a bit of their site, i totally want to try this game out - check it out now, especially if you liked sim city - but imagine sim city with other people trying to out build you... and much more... (where is that credit card...) - later Well, having read the whole site, it still looks good, but maybe not that good. And its in Beta so will have to wait... Again, if you have been living under a rock, or just don't care, here is a good set of questions and answers about what might happen to the Microsoft Monopoly. From, you guessed it, slashdot. The folks answering the questions are actual lawyers, so the answers are pretty damn good. Ya ya, i know, you have already seen this on slashdot, but i think its pretty damn funny, so here it is again - an article on "How To Write Unmaintainable Code". Another slashdot rip - art exhibit, iMacs praying? Check it out. Cool thing! 2d treadmill! I definitely want one of these things. Found it by way of this slashdot article. Apologies to my 3 readers that i've fallen behind in my updating. By way of an explanation if you care, leaving EM and the big convergence party on Thursday have left me totally burnt out, both physically and emotionally. Real life is suddenly more important then virtual life, which, as Ryan said, is probably a 'good thing'. Finished William Gibsons new novel "All Tomorrow's Parties". I'm sad i've finished it. I always read them too fast - i still want more story. I will try not to give any spoilers, but Rydell, Chevette and some of the characters from Idoru are in it. Very good. <sigh> Now i don't know how long i've got to wait till the next one. On the positive side, i can always read it again! I really enjoyed this trilogy (i'm assuming that this is the last one in this series). Not that i didn't enjoy Nuromancer/Count Zero/Mono Lisa Overdrive too, but these seemed more... Personal? Human? The characters closer to me as a reader. Something like that. I really liked Rydell, could understand what he was feeling, you know? Just go read them (Virtual Light/Idoru/All Tomorrow's Parties - all at indigo.ca). Here is a review on Slashdot that actually echoes what i feel about it quite closely.
November 11, 1999Very dumb things - a 486 overclocked to 247Mhz! Well, I've finally quit ExtendMedia. I just gave my two week notice yesterday, so a week Friday is it. So there you go. More info to follow - going to be very busy getting everything finished up here and prepare for the change over.
November 10, 1999Tony clued me in to this - Pictures for Niven's Ringworld! Pretty damn cool.
November 8, 1999All you torontoites check out Milk this Friday.
November 4, 1999Ha - funny pic of Q and I at the Citrus rave last year. It's supposed to be 20 degrees tomorrow?!? Ok, now tell me we have not messed up our atmosphere. Really funny rant about the Pokemon movie at Aint-it-cool-news, with a review at the end. Another John Katz article - this one about Microsoft and the results of the anti-trust suit. Man, sorry for the lack of updates - have been having lots of 'stuff' (good stuff) going on in 'real life'. So, believe it or not, the computer/net have taken a back seat. Hard to believe, but true. I've also been working like crazy on this thing called ZOPE. If you are a 'webmaster'ish gal or guy, check it out...
November 3, 1999Two non-politically correct sound files available here - the are .WAV's and the first one is a 'rasta' version of a Delta airline commercial - 820k. The second is a take on the 'mombo #5' song - 1Meg.
November 1, 1999More bug stuff - RoboFly! Ya right. Article at the BBC about a 'robot' slug killer. Ok. Scientists in the United Kingdom are developing a prototype robot slug-destroyer, which draws its power from the decomposing bodies of its victims. From the BBC
Palm game of the Day : Karateka I: imMortal Combat. From the old Apple ][ days. I remember it from my C64. Too bad it's only for Palm 3.x OS. I have to get one of those Visor's! From Ryan
