October 31 2000

  • October 1st through the 15th have been archived in the Old News section.
  • New collaberative tool, kind of like AIM meets shared white board meets real time video and audio chat. Groove.net. Just downloaded it. Will have more about this later, after i've fooled around with it a bit... And, sorry, its Windoze only right now...
  • If you are into the 'skinz' game and like that kind of thing, you should check out teknidermy, an online mag 'written for and by' folks in the scene.
  • Heh, a Salon top ten things to frighten all you geeks on Halloween...
  • If you like abstract games, you should check out this magazine and their article about ONYX. I really like games of this nature, tho i rarely get to play anymore. Abalone is still one of my favourites.
  • Two more articles talking about the 'spin' that the media has being putting on the conflict in the middle east - Muffled Coverage of U.N. Vote: Media Ignores Broad Mideast Consensus and Media Spin Remains in Sync with Israeli Occupation. (link - Ciara)
  • Happy Samhain! (link - Dotti)
  • Rhea's Obsession this Saturday at Lee's Palace.
  • Made my last payment to my Ontario Student Loan today! Only 3 more on my Canadian and i'm done! Ya!
  • In an effort to spend halloween in a way that i've never done before, we went to a Raptors basketball game tonight. Pretty fun actually, tho they lost. Seeing as how expensive tickets are (we got ours free), this might be my only outing to such an event.
  • October 30 2000

  • Oh ya, picked up a new comic - Geisha by Andi Watson. good indy mag.
  • Mmmmm, finally! A full book about Zope! (a product made with Python) I haven't raved about Zope in, well, almost a year, so this is perfect. If you have been considering doing some web application development using some proprietary, costly tools, you might want to look at Zope. One of the biggest drawbacks was the poor documentation, but this book pretty much clears all that up. Free (like beer and speech), Open Source (Ok, while i was looking for the url for the open source web page i tried www.osi.org - open source initiative, right? nope, not what i was expecting at all! Funny tho!), extensible through Python 'methods', its all good.
  • Ok, highly political article by Noam Chomsky, whom i respect, but has been known to piss many people off, so read at your own risk. It is about the 'situation' in Isreal and Palestine.
  • Yet another reason to start using encryption on all your correspondence.
  • Ever thought that there might be some other way to vote? This site has explanations of several different alternatives to the current system. Tho its focus is on the American voting system, the info is quite interesting. Here is an article at Discover about this stuff.
  • HavenCo and Sealand in the News. Problems with the UK immigration office, and more background info here and here.
  • some shaking and quaking in the Python community recently. Seems that Guido (the 'father' of Python) can't find a good home for his language. I thought the BeOpen deal was good, but i guess there was some stuff going on 'under the rug' that we did not see. I really like Python, and i hope this does not hurt its chances for continued growth.
  • Indrema - Linux gamebox/webTVbox/tivo? Sounds cool, but what games is it going to have? How can it compete with PSX2, Nintendo and Microsoft? Good luck, it would be great if an 'open' platform could do well, but i'm a bit skeptical...
  • Cool - SportsBrain. Crazy device that is, basically, a pace meter, but also keeps time info and, as an add on, heart rate info. Uploads it to a site which then display's graphs and info about how far you've gone, the number of calories you've burned, etc. Neat. Interesting article about this thing at eCompany. It sounds great, tho i hate the fact that you have to use the companies website to get the info out of the thing. But, i guess that's how they reduce the costs... The PAN aspects (personal area network) are also pretty cool - if i just need a 1 dollar chip to create a device that communicates with other devices on my person, that opens up some interesting possibilities... (link - RCFoC)
  • I'd like ya all to check out GiantGif.com. You like big graphics? Like the gif format? This site is for you! (link - McQuade)
  • Wow, full weekend! PSX2 action on Friday night! Pretty damn cool. Played SSX. Fun fun fun. Saturday had some folks over for movies, and Sunday was help friend move day and squish in a Baby Shower! Pretty full and fun.
  • October 27 2000

  • Ok, this is just too funny?!, messed up?! its something, anyway... NakedNews.com. Really. (Ok, you have to be fuckin' kidding me, this is just too much)
  • I'd just like to point out that so far Tony has been the only one to send me some names for the radio station. Please, if you can think of something, let me know. I'm not totally bought in to 'Radio One'...
  • Funny ad. Quicktime, 2.4Meg (link -> Greg L)
  • Umm, what else is new... Still trying to find a cross platfrom RCS/CVS/VCS solution. If you know of one, that is not $500 per seat, please tell me! So far the 'best' has been to set up a CVS server on a Linux box, and use the Mac GUI client MacCVS Pro for the mac, and either WinCVS or just the commandline for the PC (i think CS-RCS might work too. If you are looking for really simple Revision Control, for free you should check them out. I really like their tool. They also just released a 'pro' version, which i think integrates with CVS.)... Gar. Voodoo is pretty cool (and if you are a Mac only user, you should check it out - Revision Control is a godsend, really - this is a great page with tonnes of info about CVS on the Mac), but only runs on the Mac. Perforce is pretty good, but is $600 per seat, tho its free for 2 or less workstations.
  • So, even tho Tony told me he was not getting a PSX2, he got one! Pretty cool - we are all going over to Ryan's tonight to geek out (Ryan rented one - QuickTime, 1Meg).
  • Busy again - missing updates!
  • October 25 2000

  • Ok, the editor i'm using today (pico) is doing some bad stuff to this file, so if the HTML/plaintext looks a bit wierd, i probably know. I will have to clean it up later... sorry.
  • Watched "The Insider" last night. Great film - should not have taken me this long to have seen it. I could go into a rant about what happend in it, but you've all heard it before, and i'd probably be preaching to the converted. Just imagine that i've done a rant, ok? Good, thanks!
  • Want a MMRPG? For Free? Check out Dusk.
  • Oh ... my ... GOD! Web browsing on a Commodore 64!!! And if that's not enough, why not buy a SuperCPU, and expand your 64 to 20 screaming Mhz with 16Meg of Memory!?!
  • Hey, i'm in the classroom right now. I love telnet. Going pretty good... more later...
  • Doing some iShell training off-site today - so, i wont be answering emails!
  • October 24 2000

  • You know those things for gerbiles - the globes that allow them to run around? Well, check this out, a VR version for humans. (link -> Greg L)
  • Shamelessly stealing this link from Secretlair - an interview with Trent Oster of BioWare about NeverWinter Nights.
  • October 23 2000

  • In much lighter news, check out RobotDuck.com - they have some pretty cool shockwave games.
  • Well, this article from the Boston Globe makes it out that a union between the USA and Canada is practically done deal, in the next 5 to 10 years. It even quotes my favourite ex-political figure, Brian "selling Canada down the road" Mulroney - ''I certainly support getting rid of all this stuff at the border, which inhibit progress and inhibit the free movement of goods, services, and peo ple.'' Ya, i bet you do Brian. Nothing like licking the boot-heels of your masters. But i digress into paranoid fantasy, i'm sure... (link -> Dotti)
  • October 22 2000

  • More updates to Radio One (mini assignment: give me a better name for the radio station!).
  • October 19 2000

  • Oi! I've been doing a bunch of reading (an still am) about XNS.org - i think i mentioned them last month some time (It was Sept. 27th) - you should check them out. You can register a name for free, or at least the first 1,000,000 people can. Read some of the info at the site. I dig what they say, and their tech is pretty good too, tho only time will tell. Its worth a click n' read at least, if you are into privacy on the net...
  • Ok, so i think i've found somebody that i can vote for in next month's municipal election. Tooker Gomberg. I like what he has to say.
  • Hey, if you all are as sick as i am of the slant of what is presented as "News" by most media outlets, check out www.indymedia.org. They had some of the most compelling information about the IMF protests that never got one second of 'mainstream' media's attention. I've added a link to them above too, as i think they are a really really important change - i'd like to see more groups like this, doing what they are doing.
  • October 18 2000

  • Very funny point/counter-point from the Onion. (link -> Jones)
  • Was up at 6am this morning. Error. Still not all here yet. (you might think thats how i am all the time, but right now its more so)
  • Thanks to Brian from Detroit Industrial Underground for linking to the Organization again. You should check out his Haik u.
  • Ok, so like, radiohead rock. thank you.
  • October 16 2000

  • I just noticed that i've been posting using yesterday's date. Ah well. Off to Radiohead!
  • Bahahaha - humm, what uber-famous person is in this old film? Can i just say that i used to actually have to deal with folks that had seen this movie, and wer e worried cuz i played DnD! Too funny, tho the gods know i've turned out pretty wierd... Must be DnD's fault! Burn the books! Burn burn bbbuuuurrrrnnnn!!!!!!
  • Look.ca has its bi-directional high-speed (3Mbps down/200k up) internet offering running in Toronto! I will be getting that pretty damn fast, and the the TV part too i bet!
  • I'm broadcasting again - i've got it all working ok now, so feel free to check it out.
  • hey, i've got some stuff listed on Tony's exchange page. Check it out.
