"There is no time like now." - Dave Winer

Issue 4.0 - June 2001

Carpe the fscking Diem!

So this is it, ok. No more messing around. I've been in full on blob mode for far to long. My mood swings have been getting faster and more deep. And i'm sick of it.

So Ciara and i finally made the decision and went out yesterday to a Aikido lesson. I've taken Aikido before, so was a bit prepaired (ie. i actually own a gi), but was unprepaired for my reaction after the lesson. I don't think i've really worked out and raised a sweat like that in a really really long time. I stopped riding my bike after it was stolen (makes sense, but i have an old one that just needs some fixing up), and haven't really done any sports or any other "fitness" like activites in ... well ages. So i was a little overwhelmed at how good i felt after the class. This past week i'd felt myself sliding back into a bit of a slump, and post lession, i feel really good, not depressed at all. I'm sure that my lack of physical health has had a big impact on my mental health.

So, now it comes down to, and i really hate to use a companies 'line', but a "just do it" thing. We both (ciara and i) have to moteivate each other to keep going, tho, i'm really stoked right now and don't need any proding to get out to do more classes! I want to go right now!

The dojo, Aikido Shugyo, is really great. The folks there last night were very friendly and helpful. I didn't know before going, but its a co-op dojo, which is pretty cool. I had also forgotten how quiet it is, during the class. And how much you focus! Both Ciara and i were surprised that the class was over when it was - not once looking at the clock or worring about the time. Just great

Oh ya, its been how long?

Well, lets see, what has changed, other then this Aikido thing, since i last updated this site?

Oh ya, the domain went down, cuz it had been 2 years and NetworkSolutions wanted their money for it, and only had a really old email address for me (jos@digital-ren.com!), so i didn't even know what was going on, just that my email and site were no longer working! Arg! But it was an easy fix, and its all good now.

I have indeed bought a digital camera. I went with the Olympus c-3000 (review), and boy and i happy with it. I bought it at Henrys, where i got great service and pretty much all the stuff i wanted for it. The only thing that was a pain was the IR filter. That i ordered online, as trying to get it through Vistek was going to cost something like $140! Actually, i phoned them, but used their online site to make sure they had what i wanted. Again, great service and i got just what i wanted. I will try to get some online gallery going at some point. I have a couple of interesting shots now.

Got sucked into an online-comic reading frenzy! It started, and is mainly based around, with the site megatokyo.com. Now, this wouldn't have been such a time sucking deal, except that with each issue (3 a week), they 2 guys that put it together do a rant and i actually went from the very first issue to today, reading not only the comic, but the rants too. Oi. From their rants i also found little-gamers.com, luckly the author does not rant like the megatokyo folks, so i just read the comic. I was also re-introduced to sluggy freelance, tho i have not gone back to catch up to where i was when i last read it... but i will, oh yes, i will. Anyway, i really like megatokyo on a number of levels, mostly cuz the two guys writing it sound interesting and the storie itself i also like. And the art. Anyway, check it out.

Found yet another (!) computer language to get into. Its called Rebol and i think its pretty cool. Has some similarites to Forth and Java. Interperted. Distributed. Graphical. Many many platforms (like, really lots, including BeOS, Amiga, etc).

Micro who?

My distaste for MS grows and grows. This whole smart-tag thing is just the latest in a long chain of shit from them that i really don't want to be a part of anymore. I'm not sure what my options are, but the more i look at tool like Wiki for collaberative document generation, CMF for robust content sites, Rebol for networked tools and apps, Ogg Vorbis for audio, and the fact that all these are OS independant, the more i'm thinking "Linux, Be, OSX all are looking better and better..." The only down side is games, really. sigh.

Bits n Pieces

End

jos, sometime in June.
