"The key to happiness is accepting one unpleasant reality every day." - Bertrand Russel
Hey! Hello out there in the ether-net! Believe it or not, i'm still kicking and breathing. I have not had much free time in which to scratch out another issue of this new and already floundering 'zine till now. What little free time i've had i've recklessly spent with Ciara, or tried to catch up on sleep.
I'd also like to take a moment and apologize to my e-pals to whom i've been a very very poor friend/correspondent (flies in the face of what you are about to read, but hey, life is full of hypocrisy).
I've been wondering why i've not felt the same compulsion to 'publish' online as i did when i started the online Organization. I was not especially fucked up when i first started it, and, tho i might be even less fucked up now, i don't think that that is the reason. It could be that its just lost its (dubious) charm, although i would have thought that it would have done that some time ago. Perhaps not. Tony over at Secretlair.com is still going strong. I've been busy at work for the past several months which, i'm sure, has something to do with it.
I do wonder about the fact that it seems that most people produce, or feel the need, to produce "content" when they are fucked up. Content in this case spans most, if not all, expressive endeavours. Web sites included. If i were to follow this train of thought, it really is good news, as it means that i'm less fucked up then when i started this site!
In a very strange twist of fate, a bunch of us in the office won a radio contest, where you had to identify the sound bite. They'd add $100 a guess or something, but nobody guessed for like 3 weeks, so even with the pot split among us at work, i've got enough for a new digital camera! Pretty darn lucky.
First i looked at Henry's online to see the price of some of the currently available cameras. In the price range i'm looking at, i came up with the following cameras:
From there i went to imaging resource, where you can do all kinds of camera comparisons. They also have some of the most in-depth reviews i've read. For second opinions i went to Digital Photography Review.
Armed with some info, i headed to Henry's, in the flesh, to get a hold of these cameras. I was pretty sold on the G1, with its twistable, swing-out LCD, so i was quite surprised to come away from my visit most liking the Olympus C3000 [review]. After seeing prints and taking some photos in store, the Oly seemed to have the best 'look' of the cameras. It also helped that it is ~$300 less then the G1. The only difference between the 3000 and 3030 is the internal buffer memory (so you cant take as many back to back, power drive style shots) and bundled software.
In the time since my first obsessive fact gathering, i've become more and more sold on the Oly 3000. One of the interesting things i've discovered (not limited to the Oly) is that you can do infrared photography with digital cameras! Way cool. I've also discovered an interesting tool for 'storing' your photos if you are away from a computer or CD-R. Its called the Digital Wallet [review] by Minds Work , and its basically a 6Gig portable Hard-drive. Pretty handy actually. I was thinking that you could also us it to store your MP3's and swap them in and out of you digital player while away on vacation, or whatever.
I've just re-read what i've got so far, and i'm feeling something like a heel. Here i am, all this time put into researching cameras, but i'm talking about being really busy and unable to spend time emailing folks or working on the site. Here is a quick explanation (you might read that as rationalization, but i really don't think it is). Its much much easier, in the spare moments i've had, to something as mindless as compare digi-cam's, then it is to write a 'good' letter. I haven't had much time, and the time i've had i've been pretty brain dead. So, that's why the camera got time, when other stuff didn't. I will be endeavoring to get back to a more healthy schedule at work.
So, again, my apologies if i've been tardy with email. I can't promise that it will not happen again, but i do try.
Ok, this is a small, dumb thing, but which do you prefer: That each release of this 'zine be titled by date or number? i.e.. up at the top have "May 2001" or something like that, or "Issue 3" with the date someplace else?
I'm leaning toward the issue number side, but please let me know what you think!
